Melvyn H. Berks received his law degree from DePaul University,
and has practiced Divorce Law in Illinois for 40+ years. He has lectured
on various matrimonial law subjects for the Chicago Bar Association,
The Northwest Suburban Bar Association, various law schools, and high
schools. He is the former chairman of the Northwest Suburban Bar Association
Matrimonial Law Committee, and in that capacity has run various seminars
on Matrimonial Law. He has also been a member of the American Academy
of Matrimonial Lawyers.
In his 40+ years of practice, Mel Berks has tried over 100 Divorce
matters, many of which have been high profile cases. He has practiced
before the Illinois Appellate Court on many occasions, and before the
Illinois Supreme Court on a number of occasions as well. Mel has settled
approximately 1000 cases in his career.
At the trial level, he practices
primarily in Cook and Lake counties, but has, on occasion, handled
matrimonial matters in other counties throughout the state of Illinois,
and in other states as well. He is also a trained Mediator, and is
available for that purpose in Illinois and Florida. He is certified
by the Supreme Court of Florida as a Divorce Mediator. Illinois does
not offer such a designation.
Mel Berks' practice includes Divorce,
Legal Separation, Child Custody, Visitation Issues, Contested Adoption,
Pre-nuptial agreements, Mediation, and all other facets of Family Law.
Mel Berks is associated with the law firm of Deutsch, Levy, and Engel
Chartered, a firm that deals with Business Law, Estates, Tax Law, Real
Estate Law, and other legal matters. Divorce cases often contain these
issues, so the expertise of Deutsch, Levy, and Engel Chartered is consistently
available to him.
He has also represented a number of attorneys in their own Divorce, and in fact,
has represented divorce attorneys on a few occasions. This fact is indicative
of the respect he receives from his peers.
Melvyn H. Berks will utilize his legal skills, his compassion, and his understanding,
to obtain the best possible result for his client, with the least amount of stress,
turmoil and animosity between the parties.
